tattoo designs

landscape final

spectacle final

For the spectacle i wanted to create an image based off of my italian heritage.  This summer I plan on traveling their to visit my family therefore i was inspired to create a piece that best represents who I am. In addition, I wanted to bring forward a piece of italy most people are not familiar with. When talking about the country very few people know that sicily even exists! And those who do know about sicily automatically assume "the mob." So therefore I am creating a piece to enlighten people about the sicilian culture.

After working with the holga for the infinite print, i have an interest in layering images. Because I have not been there recently, I chose to use found images of sicily and layer them myself, so that they have a similar look. Lastly, I wanted to include a symbol that best represents sicily. This symbol is known as the Trinacria and is found on the sicilian flag. It was adopted after the war of the sicilian vespers.

barcelona pictures

landscape

Just recently I traveled to Barcelona, Spain and while I was there I had the opportunity to photograph all the beautiful, unique architecture. I specially enjoyed the intricate detailed buildings by artist Antoni Gaudi. His work is inspired by nature and thus had a very fluid quality to it. Since I've been back I have been working on a poster serious with the images I took. Unlike the original "feel" of the images the posters possess a very graphic and flat quality. I personally like the look of them however after I sitting in and listening to the last digital hype speaker, Michael Hersrud I wanted to reapproach these images to create a landscape. My main goal is to use the images to create a piece that has more depth and perpective. I dont plan on changing the posters I have already created however I do want to bring in some of the graphic elements they possess.

unique object

I have come up with a couple ideas on what i wanted to create for my unique object...the two sketches above were the most resolved ideas. I wanted to focus on the viewer and their experience with the piece. In order to see the infinite print the viewer has to react with the "box." I found this interesting because it really focuses on the experience the viewer has rather then the object itself. therefore my "unique" object isn't exactly about what you see but what you experience.

inspirational holga images

infinite print

final images..

so before starting this project, i wanted to define exactly what "infinite" and "print" meant and how does one interpret the two when placed together..and as i defined both and did some research i couldn't help but think how a photograph is one of the most reproduced things. when printing from a negative, one can make as many prints he or she desires, there is no limitation, it does not change or get destroyed. the beauty of a negative is you can create a print at any size or shape it is in our control.
So for my project, I plan on developing a serious of prints from a HOLGA camera. This camera seemed appropriate because of how the negative is developed. Unlike a 35 mm camera, it does not "spit out" frame by frame images but rather an ongoing print that overlaps one another. I felt as though the overlapping gives it this sense of never-ending, each image flows into one another, hence the word infinite.
In addition, thanks to the lovely technology we are given today negatives no longer HAVE to be printed only by an enlarger. We are able to scan them in digitally into our computers, so that i can print right from my desktop printer. so for the first part of this project, i plan on exploring a few different rolls of film..as far as what i am shooting i haven't set any limitations, i just want to explore different places.
I then plan on creating a unique object through the images i capture. As of now i was thinking of possible trying to make a film piece? not exactly sure if this is considered a unique "object" but I wanted to head into that direction...

maniputlation without intent

Ok..so for this project I faced a few obstacles, to say the least, and did not receive the outcome i had intended for. With the design I created, I had a difficult time transferring the image I saw on the computer screen onto the direct screen used in the studio. I ran into complications with emulsion, transparencies and exposure. What should have been a three step process became a BIG headache that led to frustration. However, if there is one thing I learned about this project and manipulation, its that manipulation of an image can happen unintentionally.
I look back on the process when making the actual design, and as I was working through it, I never considered how this image would act as a screen print. Now, that i have gone through the steps i realize, that depending on the process you chose to print, it may not always be what you hoped for. In one way, this can be a beautiful thing. The screen print I have, looks nothing like the original image however it has become something entirely new and possesses this unexpected quality to it, which is actually quite nice.
This "problem" I had made me think more about the printing process and how one never really think about the end result, before you create the image. I realize now, that depending on the medium you chose each print can be totally different. With that said, I am curious to see how other printing methods would produce this image.

round two

As i kept coming back to the first verison of this i felt as though the line quality and swirls didnt flow as nicely throughout the word. It didnt have that sonic quality that i was aiming for, so i went back and restarted. Here are the new images of my process for the second comp. I am much happier with this piece then the first.

these are a few pictures that were taken through my process in illustrator. Some of the image is shown but it has not been completed.

possible ideas

For this project, I was def. having a harder time on what to do. I was so caught up with the ideas of manipulation that I was loosing sight of what this project was really about. I def. want to continue with manipulating type however I have found a few images i found interesting and would like to incorporate it somehow. Unlike some of the other students in this class, I'm not really going off of an idea such as nature and man or children's minds, I more or less want to create an image/poster for my own enjoyment.

"manipulation"

to manipulate something is to distort, alter, or enhance an image. whether it be a single image or a collage of images. the artist will usually manipulate the image or images to create a piece that expresses something new. we as designers try to manipulate the viewer into seeing something grand or exceptional, whether it be an advertisement for a product or for pure enjoyment. in advertising especially, we try to manipulate the buyer into wanting the product were selling. this can be something as simple as a magazine cover telling the latest story or a commercial with some crazy effects. for example, just recently as i was checking out in the supermarket i realized one of the magazines front cover had an image of Jessica Simpson, covering her latest "fat dilemma." they had two images of her side by side, one current "fat" image and one of her from a few years back. clearly both of these images have been played around with in photoshop, to make it more dramatic. this brings the viewer in because if there wasn't much of a difference, most people wouldn't be interested. this is one scenario of manipulated images i have seen recently.

for the first project, i have yet to chose my direction. i am torn between picking a product and coming up with juxtaposed image to best describe and/or promote the product or just creating a collage of images in a well thought out composition that expresses a new idea
